Sze is a weekday news anchor at 11 a.m., and 5 p.m. and a reporter at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. for ABC7/KGO-TV. She got to start her career in television playing a boy in Taiwan. Her mother a Chinese Opera singer and actress, Kristen grew up on the set, playing walk-on roles. The journalism part came after her family immigrated to the U.S. While in high school, she started writing for the school newspaper, honing her newly-acquired English skills, and realized she had a golden ticket to meet people, ask questions and find answers.
The mission forced Kristen to come out of her shell and overcome her shyness. While At U.C. Berkeley, she reported for the campus radio station KALX while interning at nearly every Bay Area TV station. During the Loma Prieta quake, Sze felt news sense kick into high gear. She had driven across the Bay Bridge only an hour before the partial collapse. Sze immediately drove to the station where she interned since it was all hands on deck, she got the chance to get interviews and write some stories.
After Sze’s first story which she wrote went over the air, it was a defining moment, and knew this was it for her. Previously before coming to ABC7 she reported in Binghamton, New York, Fresno, Philadelphia, and New York City. The most rewarding part of anchoring is providing continuous coverage during breaking news.
In 2011 she was voted the ‘Best News Anchor’ by San Francisco BayList. She also won Emmy Awards in 1999 and 2002. During her free time, she is volunteering at her kids’ schools, cheering for them in sports, and rooting for her Giants, Warriors, and Cal Bears. Kristen also enjoys working to empower girls and women in leadership, STEM, and journalism.
