Quite having the skills to be a professional athlete, he knew very early on that he wanted to be in the spotlight. From performing made-up routines for his family in the living room to emceeing his school’s talent show as a kindergartner, he never shied away from the stage.
Dustin got his first taste in broadcasting in San Jose at Santa Teresa High School. In his senior year, he took journalism to get out of having to take the third year of science. It turned out to be the best thing he ever did. While anchoring the Wednesday morning broadcast Dorsey realized this is what he wanted to do the rest of his life.
Therefore he perfected his craft at San Jose State University and began his professional career after his Fall graduation. Dorsey never wanted to leave the Bay Area, because it was his home. But in this business, he learned if he wanted to be on TV, he go be on TV. He took the advice and went to the opposite side of the country to little Wilmington, NC where he became a multi-media journalist for WWAY news.
He quickly thrust into the news world where he covered a Donald Trump presidential rally, Hurricane Matthew, a Black Panther Party protest, and many more stories that helped him realize he is not in college anymore. Dustin’s passion has always been sports and 6 months in he was able to get promoted to the sports director at the station. When growing up he wanted to emulate his broadcasting idol, Rich Eisen, and become a sports anchor. Now just a short time into his career, he was able to live out the dream.
While being the sports director, he got the opportunity to cover a PGA Tour Championship, March Madness, and the NCAA baseball regional. He also told the small-town stories of the athletes in Southeastern North Carolina and watched many heads do great things which was a life-changing experience to be able to live life in a different part of the country. Later after two years in the South, he was ready to come home where ABC7 allowed him to do just that.
