Consequently, this decision marked his departure from the position of Director of the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

In 2001, Dr. Knabb embarked on his career at the NHC (National Hurricane Center). He served as a Senior Hurricane Specialist from 2005 to 2008. Subsequently, he transitioned to the position of Deputy Director at the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Hawaii. In May 2010, he made the move to The Weather Channel, taking over the role of tropical weather expert from Steve Lyons. On June 4, 2012, he was appointed as the Director of the National Hurricane Center, succeeding Bill Read.

During his time at the NHC, Dr. Knabb played a pivotal role in advancing programs designed to transform the way the public comprehends and is alerted to hurricanes, tropical cyclones, and their consequences. His leadership resulted in the implementation of the storm surge watch and warning system. Which identifies coastal and low-lying areas at risk of flooding and storm surge. Often the most significant threat to life and property during cyclones and hurricanes.

He also spearheaded the development of the NHC’s novel advisories on Potential Tropical Cyclones and Wind Arrival Timing. In his initial stint at The Weather Channel, he led the coverage of significant weather events, such as Hurricane Irene in 2011. As the NHC Director, he oversaw the hurricane center team’s efforts during severe weather events. Including Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

Before his first tenure at The Weather Channel, Dr. Knabb held the position of Deputy Director at the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu. Prior to that, he served as a Senior Hurricane Specialist and the Science and Operations Officer at the National Hurricane Center in Miami. Moreover, in this capacity, he prepared and issued official forecasts for several historic weather events, including Hurricane Katrina reaching Category 5 over the Gulf of Mexico in 2005.
