Before joining the NewsChannel 13 team, he was working for WTAJ located in Altoona, Pennsylvania. There, he served the station as a Sports Director and was anchoring the sports news on weekdays at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. Aside from this, he is a recipient of the Iris Award, which was presented for a half-hour special featuring triathlete John Gracey. In addition to this, he is the winner of three New York State Broadcasters Awards for local sports coverage.
Wyland stated in his 13 Things About Me interview that his media career began at the age of 15. This is when the General Manager of a local radio station, Lue Marick, heard his voice when he was speaking in church and told him he could work for the radio.
Away from work, he stated that he enjoys watching the College football game day and that college football is the best sport for him to cover, watch, or attend. He also states that red is his favorite color whereas 3 is his favourite number. Rodger is a dog lover but states that this did not start when he was young. He states that it started with their dog Hailey who died after 14 years and he vowed to never have a dog because of the sadness he felt after Hailey left them.. However, they later had another dog named Oliver.
In addition to that, he stated that many people don’t know that he is a good cook citing that he can make a really good breakfast. He is also an instrumentalist and has played the clarinet once, and then a saxophone. He was also a member of the marching band when he was in junior high and a member of the junior high football team and the baseball team.
During his free time, he attends board meetings and runs a Little leg having over 400 kids and families. In addition to this, he enjoys watching young kids playing ec baseball in Colonie. he is also the president of Colonie Little League and states that he wishes to catch basketball and that is what he would pursue if he was not in the media. Wyland also stated that he is an adamant fan of winning and loves winning in anything he does.
