His love and interest in the weather began when he was the young son of a fighter pilot. His father would return from work in his flight suit with his helmet under his arm, and to his inquiring mind, John always wondered what it was like to fly through those clouds.
John eventually learned to fly and became Winnipeg’s only radio pilot and traffic reporter, logging almost 8,000 flying hours over 10 years. He is a member of the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society and is endorsed by the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society. Sauder has also earned the American Meteorological Society’s Seal of Approval for Weathercasting.
Sauder is the Honorary Colonel of 2 Canadian Air Division, therefore, Winnipeggers will probably see him around town in a flight suit or Royal Canadian Air Force uniform. He is committed to giving back to the community through his involvement with various local charities.
