Houston worked for NewsChannel 13 serving the station as a News Anchor and Reporter. She has worked with the NewsChannel 13 team for over three decades. She left the station serving the station as a co-anchor of NewsChannel 13 Live at 5 and Live at 5:30 p.m. In the 34 years she has worked for the station, she has been a mainstay on the NewsChannel 13 News team. There, she was providing unforgettable storytelling and authoritative anchoring.
The NewsChannel 13 News director, Michael Raffaele, stated that whether it was being a mentor in the newsroom or a passionate voice for women in the community, she has been an inspirational force for everyone. He went on to state that Houston shed light on stories in the region that must be told including the powerful George Floyd specials to her compelling series on reparations and her groundbreaking “Today’s Women stories.
In the course of her journalism career, she has been privileged to win several community and journalism awards which include an Emmy in the year 2022 for her story on a coal plant being part of cancer-causing environmental racism. She was also privileged to receive two Emmy nominations in the year 2023.
Back in the month of August 2023, she was privileged to receive a doctorate in executive leadership and social justice from St. John Fisher College. Houston has not only made a significant impact on everyone at WNYT but has made a difference throughout the community.
In the course of her career, she has covered events stories such as the inauguration of Donald Trump, the Women’s March in Washington, D.C., John Kerry’s run for president, the Elian Gonzalez controversy in Havana, Cuba, and tornadoes in Oklahoma.
When she was an education reporter, she highlighted outstanding teachers and students with her “Top Teacher” and “The Best and Brightest” programs. She also organized a weekend trip to Space Camp in Canada for 30 educators. In addition to this, she is also known for her “Today’s Women” series which focuses on women making a difference in their careers and communities.
Houston has always been active in the community and was able to receive the Distinguished Community Service from Governor Andrew Cuomo back in the year 2012. In addition to this, she has created a communications program at Arbor Hill Community Center in order to teach children about broadcasting. She wrote her first book in the year 2004, titled The Friendships Between Women. The book title was derived from a compilation of letters from women.
