Prior to joining ABC11 News, he was working with the WBBM-TV as a Meteorologist between January 2008 and January 2011. He has also previously worked as a Staff Meteorologist with the WTAE-TV located in Hearst Pittsburgh in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. There, she worked between November 2000 and December 2007. He has also previously worked with the WTAJ TV team in Altoona, Pennsylvania Area as a Meteorologist between October 1995 and November 2000.
Schwenneker is a proud graduate of Mississippi State University where he graduated with a Certificate in Broadcast Meteorology. He kick-started his career over twenty years ago when he was working with the KBIM-TV in Roswell, New Mexico as a lead forecaster. Don counts it a privilege to have been honored with two Associated Press Awards for Best Weathercast. Additionally, he holds the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal from the American Meteorological Society as well as from the National Weather Association.
He has learned to accept the nickname he was given working as a meteorologist. This is, “Big Weatherman, ” and was called this name by a colleague for two reasons. One of the reasons is because he stands at an approximate height of 6 feet 5 inches and the other reason is that he covers big weather events such as flood warnings and tornadoes. As he was always on TV, whenever there was big weather in the forecast, he was always on the television. Since then, the name has stuck and he has learned to live with it.
Schwenneker has also previously worked as a volunteer firefighter a role he undertook for about 7 years in Pennsylvania. He is also a certified rescue technician and a first responder. Additionally, asides from firefighting, his public service includes Fire, Police, EMS dispatching, and national certification as a 911 call-taker/dispatcher.
