Prior to joining the station, he was the Chief Meteorologist at KOKH-TV in Oklahoma City, OK, from the year 1999 to the year 2004. He also served as Chief Meteorologist at WSLS-TV NBC10 in Roanoke, Virginia from the year 1995 to the year 1999. Before these roles, Bell worked as the Morning Meteorologist at WYFF-TV in Greenville, South Carolina from the year 1992 to the year 1995. His career began at WALB-TV in Albany, Georgia, where he worked as a Meteorologist from the year 1990 to the year 1992.
Bell developed a passion for weather early in life. His very 1st memory of weather was on April 4, 1974 – he was in grade 1. His classmates and him had to take cover in the hallway as tornado-producing storms passed overhead. From then on, Bell became fascinated with weather – in college, he chased storms in Texas and South Dakota and interned at television stations in Atlanta, Boston, and Oklahoma City. After that, he was ready to start working on-air.
Bell has had many memorable weather events over the years of his career. He says that he recalls Hurricane Isabel that flooded Chesapeake Bay in the year 2003, the Blizzard of 1996 with 29 inches of snow in Roanoke Valley, and the Storm of the Century (this was of 1993) that hit the East Coast and western Carolinas. Although he loves snow – especially the record snowfall in Washington during 2009-2010, his most unforgettable experience was covering the May 3, 1999 tornado outbreak in Oklahoma City. On that day, over 60 tornadoes hit central Oklahoma – 50 people were killed and $1.9 billion in damage.
Bell and his team at KOKH-TV provided continuous coverage of the storms for nearly 9 hours. For his dedication, he was awarded the Governor’s Humanitarian Award – this was for Outstanding Service by Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating on June 23, 1999.
