Tony Perkins (real name – Anthony Perkins) is an American Emmy Award-winning Anchor, Reporter, Stand-Up Comedian, and Former Meteorologist working for WRC-TV NBC4 in Washington D.C. as a news anchor. He joined the station on March 3, 2023.

In high school, he did well in class and was active in clubs – he even became the very 1st Black editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. Perkins is also a 198 graduate of American University’s School of Communication, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Media Studies and Communication. While there, he was involved with the Black student newspaper and the campus radio. Also, he helped start the campus TV station.

Early Career
Before Perkins became a news reporter and anchor, he used to work as a stand-up comedian from the year 1983 to the year 1993 – he performed at colleges and clubs nationwide. His comedy career led him to work as an off-air producer with Donnie Simpson. Also, he worked in radio at WOL for Cathy Hughes. He stays connected to his college and serves on the Dean Council for American University’s School of Communication.
Radio Career
From the year 1985 to the year 1992 (while doing stand-up) Perkins was also an on-air contributor, producer, and writer for WKYS-FM’s “The Donnie Simpson Show”. He made guest appearances on “The Mike O’Meara Show” and “The Don and Mike Show”, and he served as a co-host of “The Morning Crew” from the year 1992 to the year 1993. From the year 2014 to the year 2018, he worked as a host of “The Tony Perkins Show featuring Gary Stein” (a weekly comedy podcast).
On December 18, 2017, Perkins shared that he was joining Donnie Simpson on WMMJ-FM 102.3 Majic as co-host of the rebooted “Donnie Simpson Show” – this program aired from Monday through Friday from 3 PM to 7 PM. To fit this new role, he shifted his WTTG anchoring to Friday and Saturday mornings.

Perkins works at WRC-TV NBC4 as a news anchor, appearing every morning on News4 Today. He started his career in broadcasting in the early ’80s – he began as a desk assistant at ABC News in Washington, D.C. From the year 1986 to the year 1988, he worked as a producer and host for “DC20 Breakaway” on WDCA – this earned him an Emmy Award in the year 1988. He later won another Emmy. From the year 1998 to the year 1999, he worked as a co-anchor for Fox Morning News, and from the year 1993 to the year 1998, he was a meteorologist at WTTG in D.C.
On March 8, 1999, Perkins joined “Good Morning America”, as a features reporter and weekday meteorologist. He took over from Spencer Christian and became known for saying, “the weather in your neighborhood.” Alongside Charles Gibson, Diane Sawyer, and Robin Roberts, Perkins helped the show recover in ratings. He also appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” the same year, made a cameo appearance on “Less than Perfect” in the year 2004, and worked as a co-host of “Stealing Scenes” on ABC News Now, .
Perkins left “Good Morning America” on December 2, 2005 and he returned to WTTG. At WTTG, Perkins started again as the morning weather anchor – he then became the primary morning news anchor with Allison Seymour in July 2012. By October 28, 2013, he had moved to co-anchor the 10:00 PM news with Shawn Yancy and the 5:00 PM news with Laura Evans.
Perkins left WTTG on January 19, 2019 – this was to focus more on his radio work. He briefly joined CBS affiliate WUSA in Washington, D.C. (on October 21, 2019) for the morning show “Get Up DC!”. Perkins returned to WUSA full-time on January 7, 2020 as a news anchor for “Get Up DC!” – this also let him continue serving as a host of his radio show on afternoons at WMMJ.
