Fitzgerald works at CBS-6 as the evening anchor. He has moderated many election-year debates, including the US Senate debate in 2014. He is passionate about assisting children in the Virginia foster care system. Fitzgerald works on the CBS-6 “Hand to Hold” series, in which a different child is featured every day every November.
Before joining the station, he was the evening anchor for two years at Raleigh, N.C. There, he covered green issues including hybrid vehicles and green homebuilding, composting by way of vermiculture (that’s right, worms!) Before working in Raleigh, N.C., he spent decades at MSNBC working as an overnight and weekend anchor.
When former President Gerald Ford died, he was on the desk. Prior to that, he worked at WVTM in Birmingham, Alabama for five years as an anchor/reporter reporting hurricanes, schools, crime, and politics while anchoring the weekend morning shows. He covered the wake of 9/11 in New York City on loan to WNBC for ten days.
Also, he traveled to Texas to report the Columbia shuttle disaster. He began his career as a “one-man band” reporter on Long Island, NY, working for News 12 Long Island. From Harvard, he holds an undergraduate degree in English and American literature and from Columbia holds a master’s degree in journalism.
