Stone is a reporter at ABC7 News. For the past nine years, San Francisco has been his home and there isn’t another place he would rather be. Since 2011 he has covered news in the Bay Area. Previously before joining KGO-TV/ABC7 J. R. worked at an independent channel in town as a weekend news and sports anchor. While in the station he won an Emmy for her news anchoring and helped turn lackluster ratings into some of the top-rated programs of the week.
J. R. anchored their breaking news coverage during the Ghost Ship warehouse fire. During the news of a mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival surfaced, he was live on the desk for four and a half hours. He also anchored for 10 straight hours in 2013 during the Asiana Airlines flight crashed at SFO. Previously he anchored a sports show called Sports Night Live where they made viewers a part of the show and it paid off. With no network affiliation, they managed to become one of the top-rated sports programs in the San Francisco market.
Stone covered the 2 World Series, 3 Daytona 500’s, 6 NBA Finals, 2 NCAA Football National Championships, 3 Super Bowls, and a Stanley Cup Final. J. R. was in the clubhouse interviewing players and getting doused with champagne when the Giants won their last two World Series. He has over 16 years of on-air news and sports experience,including the CBS Early Show, The Weather Channel, and national appearances on CNN.
Prior to coming to the Bay Area, he was a journalist in Florida, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. While in Florida was where he covered the Casey Anthony case and Oklahoma had the most extreme weather he has ever seen. While in Oklahoma he covered flooding, ice storms, tornadoes, and heatwaves. In his two years in Arkansas J.R. covered a number of big stories including the hospitality of The Natural State first and foremost.
