Veronica Johnson Career
Johnson works for WJLA-TV/ABC7 as a D.C. Chief Meteorologist. Before joining the station she worked for NBC4/WRC-TV. She is the first woman and Black woman to hold the position of a Chief Meteorologist in the station’s 75-year history. Prior, she was the 7News Morning Lead Meteorologist. Johnson joins the 7News’ On Your Side evening team of Michelle Marsh, Jonathan Elias, Alison Starling, and Scott Abraham.
She worked at WABC-TV in New York, WMAR-TV and WBFF-TV in Baltimore, and The Weather Channel before moving to Washington, Johnson. In 1991, she was the first Meteorologist employed by Sinclair Broadcast Group when the company started its first newscast. In 2007 she was the emcee for Senator Barack Obama’s Special Task Force on Climate Change and from 2008 to 2013 she worked on Washington DC’s Joint Center Advisory Committee on Climate Change.
As a chair of the American Meteorological Association’s Board of Enterprise Communication, she facilitated scientific information between government, public sector groups, academia, and researchers. Also, she worked on many AMS organizations, Eyes on the Environment, Station Scientist, and The Advisory Board.
From the University of North Carolina at Asheville she holds a degree in Atmospheric Science, and also holds the American Meteorological Society’s prestigious television seal of excellence and rare Fellow award. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her family.
