In 1983, he joined North Carolina State University where he attained his Bachelor of Science in Meteorology in 1987. Van serves as the chief meteorologist at FOX 8 WGHP-TV and is on air at 5, 6, 10, and 11 pm Monday-Friday night based in High Point, North Carolina. In addition to these roles, he is also the host of a segment named “Van’s Weather Kids” where he teaches children all about being a weather forecaster and meteorologist live on air.
Upon joining WWGHP-TV, he started off by serving as the 11 p.m., Monday through Friday meteorologist and later on started serving as the 5 p.m. weather when WGHP became the first station in the market with a 5 p.m. news.
Prior to working at FOX 8 WGHP, he worked at WBTW based in Florence, South Carolina where he served as the evening meteorologist from January 1989 to March 1990. Previously, from March 1986 to December 1988, he worked at WCTI-TV 12 ABC based in New Bern, North Carolina where he served as a weekend meteorologist. He has also won several awards and honors including two Emmy Awards and honors from Reader’s Choice Awards, Rhino Times, and Triad Style.
