Plohetski KVUE as a senior reporter. He joined the KVUE team in August 2013. Additionally, he has served the station for more than half a decade. Also, he serves as a nationally awarded investigative journalist, writer, and broadcaster whose work includes print, television, and digital mediums. During his over 20 years stint as a reporter in Austin, he has reported the area’s biggest stories.
Further, his investigative and responsible reporting has caused indictments and endorsed new state laws and other government reforms. Moreover, he serves the Austin American-Statesman since 2000 as an investigative reporter. In addition to that, he has attained over two dozen national and state journalism honors. For instance, a national Edward R. Murrow Award, and three National Headliner awards.
Else, he attained the prestigious Hillman Prize which broadcasting honors journalists “who pursue investigative reporting and deep storytelling in the service of common good.” In 2021, he served as the initial winner of the Dan Rather Medal for News & Guts for journalistic bravery and served as one of three finalists for the Michael Kelly Award for “journalists whose work exemplifies the fearless pursuit and expression of truth.”
Texas Managing Editors dubbed him Star Reporter of the Year. On a side note, he previously served as the runner-up for the award twice. Additionally, he attained regional Emmy awards for environmental reporting, general assignment reporting, and nonstop broadcasts of news happening. In 2020, he uncovered the death of Javier Ambler II while in the custody of the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.
Plohetski’s investigation of the agency’s links with a reality TV program exposed other questionable force experiences. Further, the show was remitted and the Texas Legislature decreed a ban on law enforcement agencies associating with such productions. Moreover, he produced a TV and newspaper series on the explosion of rock-mining quarries in the Texas Hill Country.
Due to the series, “Left in the Dust” he attained a National Headliner award for environmental broadcast reporting. Also, he received a regional Emmy award for the series. In 2018, he served as a trusted authority throughout a wave of bombing attacks in Austin during a 19-day span. To boot, he was the key reporter to chronicle in the midst of the night that the suspect took his own life as police approached.
Later, he obtained exclusive details about the bomber’s audio confession. Furthermore, his work for the Statesman was portrayed in a portfolio that attained a Sigma Delta Chi award from the Society of Professional Journalists. Also, the portfolio obtained was dubbed Texas Star Breaking News Report of the Year and gained a Charles E. Green Award from the Headliners Foundation of Texas.
On top of that, his reporting for KVUE served as a compound that attained a first-place award for breaking news reporting from the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters and a Charles E. Green Award from the Texas Headliners Foundation in the broadcast division. Following the attacks, he wrote and co-produced the KVUE documentary “Stopping the Austin Bomber.”
To boot, he served as an author of “19 Days,” a three-day serial narrative for the Statesman. The narrative supplied the most detailed account of how law enforcement located the attacker. And, it obtained recognition from the national Society for Features Journalism. Furthermore, he’s done other eminent work in recent years such as his 2016 investigation into the violent apprehension of Breaion King and a Black elementary teacher who was subjected to force by an officer after a traffic offense.
Following the case, broad reforms within the department were ignited. Additionally, it caused an HBO documentary, “Traffic Stop,” and gained an Academy Award nomination. Also, it starred Plohetski’s cameo. Moreover, he has served on the fronts of numerous of the biggest regional and national news stories such as hurricanes and mass shootings.
During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he was in New Orleans. Else, he served as one of the key reporters to arrive in Sutherland Springs in 2017 succeeding a gunman who murdered over two dozen people in a church. The National Association of LGBTQ Journalists and the national Associated Press Sports Editors honored him. Else, he gained a Texas Gavel Award for criminal justice reporting.
On top of that, Texas Medical Association granted him an Anson Jones M.D. Award for health reporting. In 2020 and 2021, Gannett honored him for Individual Achievement. Also, the Austin Alliance for Women in Media dubbed him Journalist of the Year in 2020 and 2021. Routinely, he serves as a speaker for college journalism classes at the University of Texas and St. Edward’s University.
