After discovering his passion for journalism in high school, Mitchell embarked on a career in television news. He started at St. Louis’ ABC-TV affiliate, KTVI-TV, where he gained valuable experience before pursuing a degree in journalism at the University of Missouri. Graduating in 1982, he began his professional journey at KMBC-TV in Kansas City as a reporter trainee.
In 1983, Mitchell moved to Dallas, Texas, working as an education and general assignment reporter for the morning news show “Daybreak” at WFAA-TV. Returning to St. Louis in 1985, he joined KTVI-TV as a full-time reporter, where he produced an acclaimed series on street gangs in East St. Louis.
Transitioning to KMOV-TV, CBS’s St. Louis affiliate, in 1987, Mitchell served as a weekend anchor and daily reporter for five years. In 1992, he moved to CBS News as an anchor for “Up to the Minute,” covering global stories. He became a news correspondent for “Eye to Eye” in 1993, reporting on events like the United States’ operations in Haiti.
Mitchell shifted to Washington in 1995, covering significant political events such as the GOP National Convention. His career at CBS continued to flourish, co-anchoring the “Saturday Early Show” in 1997 and winning an Emmy Award for coverage of the TWA Flight 800 crash. He joined the “CBS Evening News Saturday Edition” in 1999 and became a correspondent for “Sunday Morning” in 2002. Finally, in 2007, Mitchell was hired as a hard news anchor for CBS’ “Early Show.”
