Amaro played baseball and soccer while attending William Penn Charter School, where he graduated in 1983. In 1987, he received his degree from Stanford University. He participated in the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League during the summers of 1985 and 1986 while playing college baseball, and he was chosen an all-star in both years. Drafted by the California Blessed messengers within the 11th circular of the 1987 beginner draft, he marked June 16, 1987. In 1989 he started the season by batting .360 for Quad Cities of the Midwest Alliance, and after that finished it by hitting .382 for the Midland of the Texas Alliance. He debuted within the major associations on June 8, 1991. Additionally, on December 8, 1991, he was exchanged by the Blessed messengers with Kyle Abbott to the Philadelphia Phillies for Von Hayes.
