Rich Marriott is an American meteorologist who is working for KING 5 as a meteorologist for KING 5 Mornings. Also, he serves as the senior meteorologist since January 2017. He joined the KING 5 Weather team in December 1987. Further, he has served the station for more than 3 decades. Upon joining the station initially served as a meteorologist. Moreover, he has served Washington as a forecaster for more than 4 decades.

Marriott serves KING 5 as a meteorologist for KING 5 Mornings. Also, he serves as the senior meteorologist since January 2017. He joined the KING 5 Weather team in December 1987. Further, he has served the station for more than 3 decades. Upon joining the station initially served as a meteorologist. Moreover, he has served Washington as a forecaster for more than 4 decades.
Additionally, he served the Northwest Avalanche and Mountain Weather Forecast Center (NWAC) for 15 years where 12 of the years he served as a forest service meteorologist stationed in the National Weather Service Office in Seattle. They supplied detailed avalanche and mountain weather forecasts to government and private agencies and the public. Also, he was tasked with checking the snowpack stability in the mountains and teaching avalanche courses.
To boot, he installed some of the initial remotely telemetered mountain weather stations in the Northwest. Through his work at NWAC, he went to the red zone at Mt. St. Helens in 1980. Marriott and his NWAC co-founder, Mark Moore supplied avalanche hazard information to the scientists serving on the volcano. Moreover, they spent time with the famed, Harry Truman.
In addition, they witnessed the change of the Spirit Lake region from a tranquil, beautiful mountain scenery to a dotted, moonscape with exploding fumaroles and house-size pieces of ice from the ruined glaciers. Earlier at NWAC, he had summers off which he spent serving the UW as Station manager for the Blue Glacier Research Project in the Olympic Mountains.
While there, he retained a research facility at the 6,800-foot level on Mt. Olympus and carried out research in glaciology, meteorology, and climatology. Furthermore, he was occasionally involved in assisting with rescue and search and educational programs for Olympic National Park. Over the years, he has served regularly as a weather and avalanche planning consultant
Actively, he is still involved in the snow and avalanche community as General Secretary of the Steering Committee for the International Snow Science Workshop (ISSW). The ISSW is one of the leading international conferences on these topics. Through his work, Marriott has met all of the local TV weathercasters.
The longtime Seattle weathercaster, Harry Wappler conveyed that he should try weather-casting and got him an interview with KING 5. To his surprise, he was employed to serve on the station’s weekend evening newscasts. And, for 3 years he served both KING 5 and NWAC. Later, he got offered a full-time job where he was tasked with weekday mornings.
During his quarter-century with KING 5, he met amazing people and had unique experiences. However, his most unforgettable being flying with the Blue Angels and assisting in the coverage of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. His journalistic claim to fame was an Emmy Award for work on the special on Climate Change.
Additionally, he is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society, and the American Meteorological Society. Also, he holds their broadcast seal. To boot, he is a professional member of the American Avalanche Association, and Board Member Emeritus of the Friends of NWAC.
Further, he has served as a co-author of research papers in scientific journals. For instance, Nature, Annals of Glaciology, Journal of Geoelecticity and Geomagnetism, Solar Physics, and others. If he is not working, he enjoys traveling, skiing, snowboarding, biking, hiking, and pulling weeds. Twice, he has summited Mt. Rainier and backpacked long sections of the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington and California. Moreover, he plans to climb Mt.Kilimanjaro with his daughter.
