Travis serves WAGA as an investigative reporter since 1994. He joined the FOX 5 Atlanta team in 1990. Since he joined the FOX 5 I-Team, his work led to the shutdown of businesses that deluded the public and uncovered government waste, and misconduct. Also, his works have triggered criminal investigations that eventually sent people to prison
However, his major achievement was to prevent the imprisonment of innocent people. Further, in 2018 a chain of stories on police roadside drug test kits uncovered how people ended up wrongly imprisoned because the tests wrongly concluded they had drugs in their cars.
Additionally, his investigations detected 145 false positives in Georgia in just one year. Additionally, the project, “$2 Tests: Bad Arrests,” triggered law enforcement agencies globally to reassess their drug test kit policies, with some halting their use completely. The investigation secured the prestigious 2018 Peabody Award, one of only 30 honorees from worldwide.
Through the years, his investigative work has also amassed two national Edward R. Murrow awards and over 20 regional Emmy awards. Also, he received the Henry W. Grady Mid-Career Alumni Award from the University of Georgia. In addition, in 2015, he was mentioned to the Silver Circle which is a lifetime accomplishment honor given by the Southeast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Prior to severing WAGA,. he served in Memphis at WMC-TV, in Greenville at WYFF-TV, and in Macon at WMAZ-TV as a reporter. Nonetheless, his initial professional job in journalism is when he served the Athens Banner-Herald in 1979 as a sports writer. Moreover, he served the newspaper while still pursuing his undergraduate studies in college.
On a side note, when he was 29 years old Travis was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. He took up running as a way to cope with the disease. Since then, he is an ardent marathon runner and has partaken in and completed every Peachtree Road Race since 1993. Else, he is a lifelong Braves fanatic.
