Heggen works for KPIX 5 as a Chief Meteorologist. He has been enchanted with the weather for as long as he can remember. He happened to be looking out the kitchen window when lightning struck a neighbor’s house, and in kindergarten, a tornado skirted the town where his family lived. Heggen was brought up in South St. Paul, Minnesota, but since graduating from high school he has moved all around the country.

He joined the University of Denver and obtained a bachelor’s degree in geography, performing research into the effects of El Nino on weather patterns in the Rocky Mountains. Heggen earned a master’s degree in meteorology from Texas A&M University after graduating. His research at Texas A&M concentrated on lightning patterns within severe and tornadic thunderstorms, a course of study that helped prepare him for forecasting the weather in some of the most challenging markets in the country.

Prior to joining the station, he worked for stations in Huntington, WV, Nashville, TN, Beaumont, TX, Raleigh, NC, Duluth, MN, and Tulsa, OK. Heggen was awarded the American Meteorological Society’s seal of approval in 2002, and he upgraded that to the AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal in 2016.

Moreover, he has reported everything from blizzards in the Upper Midwest to tornado outbreaks in the Southern Plains to hurricanes along the Carolina coast. Over the years she earned several awards for weather coverage multiple “Best Weathercast” and “Best Weather Anchor” awards from the Associated Press and Society of Professional Journalists, and six Emmy Awards. The Radio, Television, and Digital News Association of the Carolinas named him “Weathercaster of the Year” in 2019.
