Thomas is an evening news anchor for FOX 5. His interest in weather began at a very young age when the EF3 tornado tore through the city of College Park, damaging his elementary school. His curiosity to understand the disaster took him on the meteorology path. After graduating his first experience with FOX 5 came in the summer of 2011 when he took a weather internship under the guidance of Tony Perkins and Tucker Barnes.
After graduation from Penn State, Mike took a job with Commodity Weather Group in Bethesda, MD where he focused on learning extended range, forecast techniques, seasonal forecasting, and weather model analysis. Thomas’s forecasts were featured in various articles from CNBC, USA Today, Bloomberg, MSNBC, and Reuters because of Forecasting and advising commodity traders and other meteorologists on the New York Stock Exchange.
Thomas began his television career when he joined the FOX 5 Weather Team in the summer of 2014 where he worked as a part-time weekend morning meteorologist. Afterward, he joined the team full-time, reuniting with his old mentor Tucker Barnes. While working at FOX 5 he has covered several big stories including the great Blizzard of 2016, hurricanes, and tornado outbreaks. Mike also filled in with occasional field reporting, traffic, and “Good Day DC” appearances.
In the spring of 2022, he was then promoted to evening meteorologist to fill the void left by longtime FOX 5 Chief Meteorologist Sue Palka. When he is not working Thomas spends most of his time at his home in Columbia, MD with his golden retriever Sid. He is an avid sports fan and loves playing volleyball, lacrosse, and hockey. He loves traveling, skiing, hiking, and learning about history and technology.
