While in high school Matthew became involved with the American Meteorological Society and delivered his first presentation there in 2013 at 15 years old. In 2015 he then headed to college taking an unconventional course by going to Harvard and creating his own atmospheric sciences major by cross-enrolling at MIT.
Cappucci also became a Coca-Cola scholar, a Henry David Thoreau Foundation scholar, and a recipient of the 2015 AXA Insurance scholarship, and the Mike Wallace Scholarship. He graduated in 2019 and headed to The Post full-time, ecstatic to move to Washington D.C.

Matthew is a freelance meteorologist for FOX 5. At the age of 5 years he already had an interest in weather, he was obsessed with waterspouts. At the age of 7, he bought a video camera to “storm chase” in his neighborhood. In third grade, he was delivering weather forecasts on the PA system at school, and he hopped in front of the green screen to do weather for public access in his hometown of Plymouth, Mass, in middle school.
While in school, Cappucci started working as a freelancer for The Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang. While at The Post, he began covering U.S. weather stories for international outlets like BBC World News, DW News, and CTV Canada, delivering enough live reports to cobble together a demo reel. Throughout, he storms chased as often as he could, filming hits in front of tornadoes, in the heart of blizzards, and in the eye of hurricanes.
Matthew started delivering radio forecasts at WAMU, the local NPR affiliate but still aimed at working in TV. His first day on air featured live tornado coverage of a twister that moved into downtown D.C. Two months after, he tracked down a tornado in Annapolis, Maryland, where he filmed reports and covered the storm live in Annapolis for ten hours straight.
When he is not working at FOX 5, he is either working for the Washington Post, WAMU, or MyRadar, or working on the side as an educational consultant or teaching public speaking classes. Cappucci also continues delivering reports to international outlets during hurricane season. During his free time, he is storm chasing. He is also an avid traveler and spends every hour he has working through his bucket list.
