Upon completion of her high school education, Swope went on to join the University of Oklahoma. After completing her undergraduate studies in May 2010, she became its alumnus with a Bachelor Of Science degree in Meteorology with a Broadcast Journalism and Mathematics minor. While in school, she served OWL as a forecaster. Additionally, she served CIMMS part-time and on an NSF grant concentrating on solar panels in Oklahoma. Moreover, she OU Nightly on shifts and served IT part-time. Swope served as a member of the OU chapter of AMS and interned at NEWS9. Also, she served on the president’s & dean’s honor roll.
Lacey Swope Career
Swope serves KWTV-DT as a morning meteorologist. She joined the News 9 team in 2011. Further, she has served the station for more than a decade. For most of her life, she knew what she wanted to pursue in her career as she grew up fascinated with the sky, lightning, hail, and yes, tornadoes. Additionally, she pursued a career in meteorology in order to share her passion for weather with others and learn about the atmosphere daily.
However, she landed her initial job in Sioux City at KMEG 14. During her streak there, she served as a weekday morning meteorologist. Also, she served as a forecaster for the tri-state region of South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa. Moreover, she provided coverage for everything such as blizzards, droughts, floods, and tornadoes counting the April 9, 2011 tornado that ruined 60% of the town of Mapleton.
When the destructive tornado outbreak of May 19th and 20th occurred, she was on-air with her team. Later, the largest tornado on record to make an impact less than two weeks later on May 31st. For three days, she provided coverage for the tornado making it her most unforgettable encounter. Further, she and the News9 team attained a regional Emmy Award for their extended broadcast of the event.
When she’s not working, she spends time with her husband Tyler and daughter, her dog, and the rest of her family. To boot, she loves anything outdoors such as hunting and fishing, taking random road trips, shopping, and storm chasing.
