Mitchell attended Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in Evanston, Illinois where she graduated with a master’s degree in broadcast journalism. While in college she received a full-tuition scholarship from the McCormick Foundation. She was also a Knight Foundation and Carnegie Corporation News 21 Fellow.
She also graduated from Emory University in Atlanta where she also received a full-tuition scholarship and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science and journalism. Marissa was one of six graduates in her class named to the school’s Hall of Fame for her dedication to Emory and the surrounding community. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated and the National Association of Black Journalists.

Mitchell is Morning News Anchor and Host for FOX 5. Previously before joining FOX 5 DC, She worked at our sister station, FOX 5 Atlanta as an anchor and reporter. While in the station she reported during the day and co-anchored the station’s “News Edge at 11” on weeknights. Before that, she worked as a solo anchor on Weekends for the “Good Day Atlanta”. She was then nominated for “Best Anchor” by the Regional Southeast EMMY Chapter during her first year of anchoring in her hometown of Atlanta.
In her work, Marissa field-anchored the inauguration of Georgia Republican Governor Brian Kemp who faced a contentious race against Democrat Stacey Abrams that gained national attention. Among the major stories she has covered include the North Carolina following high-profile, Hurricane Irma, multiple days of protests in Atlanta and Charlotte, officer-involved shootings in 2016, and Super Bowl LIII week.
Throughout her career, Mitchell has interviewed several newsmakers including actress Halle Berry, screen legend Clint Eastwood, world-renowned wellness guru Deepak Chopra, and media mogul Oprah Winfrey. Before coming to Atlanta Marissa worked at WBMA-TV in Birmingham, Alabama as an anchor and reporter. While at WBMA-TV she was part of the station’s launch team for its “Focus @ 4” program and also worked as an anchor for its “Midday News.” She covered city hall and often broke exclusive reports regarding government funding.
Marissa started her broadcasting career at WTVC-TV in Chattanooga, Tennessee where she served as a multimedia journalist. While there she reported breaking news, including the deadly April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak across the Southeast. She also worked as a writer for Rolling Out and Crossroads News. From the age of nine, she wanted to become a journalist. During her free time, she loves to travel, go to concerts and festivals, dance, and spend time with her family.
