Harned is the chief meteorologist for WAVE 3. He forecasts on weeknights at 5, 5:30, 6, and 11 p.m. and the WAVE Weather App. He is Nelson County’s very own. He has worked with the area’s best meteorologists: John Belski and Tom Wills, Kevin’s mentor over the years. In 2010 upon the announcement of John’s retirement, Kevin was named Chief Meteorologist at WAVE.
Before working under John’s direction Kevin met him in the 7th grade and managed to keep in touch with him for years and says he looks forward to carrying on the tradition of Louisville’s best weather team with accurate, dependable forecasts delivered in a personable, yet professional manner.
Harned was one of the youngest members of the American Meteorological Society to receive the AMS Television Broadcast Seal of Approval. He enjoys forecasting but says there is nothing like witnessing the power of nature. Mostly you’ll find him chasing tornadoes and hurricanes, standing in floods and the worst winter storms. He enjoys a good thunderstorm and his favorite weather is 70 degrees and sunny.
During his spare time, he likes to water ski and spend time with friends and family. While working at WAVE, Kevin filled in on the anchor desk, delivered breaking news a time or two, and hosted WAVE Listens. He also hosts Secrets of Bluegrass Chefs across the Commonwealth.
Harned makes many community appearances and uses his so-called “weird” hobby of auctioneering to benefit many local charities. Due to his involvement in countless organizations and events, the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber of Commerce recognized Kevin as its 2012 Man of the Year. He has also been named Best TV Weathercaster by the readers of Louisville Magazine in its annual “Best of Louisville” edition for the past seven years. He says that weather is his hobby and people are his passion.
