She made the move back just in time for the historic winter of 2015 which saw more than 100 inches of snow, crippling mass transit.
From the start of the COVID-19 pandemic back in the year 2020, she has been on the frontlines exposing how the crisis was impacting people living and working in nursing homes, the impact of remote learning on students, inside prisons and jails, and the obstacles many faced getting a vaccine once those became available in Massachusetts.
Asides from this, she works to give all members of the community an opportunity to have their voices heard especially for the young people. She has also produced, written, and anchored multiple Emmy-Nominated in-depth specials examining the youth mental health crisis, the uncertain futures which persist for young immigrants brought to the United States as children, known as “Dreamers”, and the teen vaping crisis.
Asides from this, back in the year 2021, she was one of 10 local reporters nationwide to receive an invite to the White House to interview the First Lady and help bring the holiday decorations of the East Wing to the public, since tours were still canceled due to the pandemic.
During his original series, “Coffee with Candidates,” she interviewed every Democratic presidential candidate including President Joe Biden. This is in addition to interviewing every Republican candidate ahead of the 2020 election.
From then on, she has expanded the franchise to include Massachusetts Senate races and this historic Boston mayoral race in 2021. This in addition to being the first woman and person of color eected Mayor of the city. This series garnered him an Emmy nomination for political reporting.
She’s also been on the front lines of major, national news stories. In 2015, she traveled to Philadelphia after a train derailed, killing eight and injuring more than 200 people. While there, Kerry dug into the issue of train safety and the slow implementation of “Positive Train Control” which may have prevented that tragedy. Kerry played a key role in Boston 25’s 2016 Election coverage.

Asides from this, she was inside the Javits Center in New York City when Clinton supporters watched the results roll on the historic election night. After this, she was placed at the head of the inaugural parade route in Washington D.C. the day when President Donald Trump was sworn in. She was also on the ground in Manhattan on Halloween covering 2017 hours after a terrorist rented a box truck and drove down the bike path on the West Side Highway.
Kerry Kavanaugh Career
Prior to joining the Boston 25 News team, she was working for WSB-TV in Atlanta, Georgia. Asides from this, she was the first reporter on-scene when a gunman took four firefighters, hostage after making a bogus call for help. Kerry’s tackled complex, personal stories as the immigration debate churned in Georgia.
In her time there, WSB-TV dispatched her to cover major national stories which include the tragedy in Sandy Hook back in 2012 and the Boston Marathon Bombing back in 2013. Asides from this, she was also a Consumer Investigative Reporter and anchor for WFTS-TV in Tampa, Florida. During her time in the Tampa Bay area, she covered Florida politics and consumer issues.
During her time at WHO-TV, in Des Moines, Iowa, she traveled to Villachuato, Mexico which was in order to reconnect with undocumented immigrant workers after their meatpacking plant was raided and they were deported.
She began her broadcasting career in the Mountain West in Bozeman, Montana. Asides from this, she was a one-woman show: writing, shooting, and editing, all her own stories. Asides from this, she traveled to Germany where she was participating in a journalism immersion program and produced a series of stories.
She has also previously served as a mentor through Boston Partners in Education and the Council for Women of Boston College. Asides from this, she serves on the board of Resolve New England which advocates for people struggling to start or grow their families. Back in the year 2018, she shared her and her husband’s own struggles to get pregnant and how she went through the process of IVF before having her daughter in the year 2019. Asides from this, she states that she loves hearing from people who continue to share their stories with her.
She states that she is very excited about her journalism career brought home in order to cover the city she loves. Asides from this, she states that she is fluent in Spanish and states that this helps her tell stories from a variety of communities. Away from work, she enjoys traveling and trying new restaurants passing along suggestions in Boston and beyond. As for her education, Kavanaugh attended Boston College where she studied between 1996 and 2000. There, she was studying Communication and Media Studies.
