Cate works as an Anchor/Reporter at WFLA-TV. Here at WFLA, he has earned many awards and honors. Prior to joining the station, he worked for WIAT-TV as an Anchor/Reporter. At WIAT-TV in Birmingham, Alabama he anchored evening newscasts at 5 and 10 p.m. He co-anchored the 6 p.m. news at WMAR-TV in Baltimore, Maryland in 1992 before joining WIAT-TV. In Baltimore and Washington D.C., his investigative reports included an award-winning undercover series on government waste.
Cate then moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1988 where he worked as a weekend anchor and investigative reporter at WBNS-TV. A series of undercover reports on courtroom corruption was Cate’s most recognized work there. Cate began his career in the late 90’s, as he worked at WKPT-TV in Kingsport, Tennessee as a reporter, producer, and anchor.
In 1994, he stood on the beaches of Normandy, France to report on the 50th anniversary of D-Day. In the former Soviet Union, he reported from Moscow on the fall of communism in 1991. He reported the World’s Fair in Seville, Spain, in 1992, Pope John Paul II’s visit to Denver in 1993 and 1995 Baltimore. He reported on troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2005 at the military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany.
Cate has reported the destruction from several major hurricanes dating back to Andrew in Florida. In 2003, he covered from Cape Canaveral on the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, and in 2005 Shuttle Discovery’s Return to Flight. He reported President Barack Obama’s historic trip to Havana, Cuba in 2016. Cate flew to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to report on the treatment of terrorist suspects in 2006.
He has received four Edward R. Murrow Awards, many Associated Press Awards, 14 Emmy Awards, and honors during his reporting career. In the Atlanta chapter of the NATAS, he was named Best News Anchor and one of the most influential people in Florida politics.
