Abernathy co-anchors the WLOX 4 O’Clock Show and WLOX News Now at 5 p.m. with David Elliott in the mid-80s Karen Abernathy gave people the news on one station and David Elliott gave the news on another channel while in Jackson, Mississippi. Dave worked at WJTV and Karen worked across town at WAPT.
Karen has been an anchor team ever since she joined the station, even being inducted into the Mississippi Broadcast Hall of Fame together. Besides being an anchor she is also a WLOX health reporter. She says she loves bringing people information that can really make a difference in their lives. To her health news is a challenge to keep up with because there is so much research. And that research leads to new advances in medicine every day.
Abernathy also works throughout the year on special health projects like the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway. She hosts the giveaway every year bringing people stories about South Mississippians who are treated at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She enjoys acting in local stage productions where she had the lead role in several of them. Karen’s love of the theater led to the creation of the WLOX Backstage report which allows her to give viewers a preview of local plays during WLOX News at 5:00 p.m. when they are ready to open.
