After graduating from the university he worked in TV journalism in both New York and Washington, DC. Now, he’s thrilled to finally be back in Ohio with his family.
Joe was then awarded the Tim Russert Post-Graduate Fellowship allowing him to jumpstart his career at the late Russert’s iconic news program. He worked for almost 6 years with NBC News’ Meet the Press and eventually became a producer where he covered some of the biggest political stories in the country. He produced interviews with major political and cultural figures — including past (and current) presidents and leading government officials and traveled to rallies and debates to cover multiple election cycles. As a reporter, Toohey won an Emmy award for a story about giant abandoned busts of every U.S. president.
After working at NBC Joe decided to make the switch from behind the camera to being in front of it. He was then hired by FOX5 in New York City to work as a reporter in early 2016. Using his experience in political journalism from NBC, he became the station’s lead Political Reporter covering local and national elections (including the 2016 Republican National Convention here in Cleveland). While working at FOX5 New York, Toohey helped create, launch, and anchor the station’s Noon newscast, aptly titled “The Noon.”
