He went to Washington and Lee University where he attained his Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism in 1980. Dashiell serves as the senior reporter at WDBJ in Roanoke, Virginia. Prior to working at WDBJ in Roanoke, he worked at WDBJ bureau in Richmond where he covered state politics, the Governor’s Office, and the Virginia General Assembly. He worked for WDBJ, Richmond for a total of 5 years and was elected president of the Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association.
Prior to his tenure at WDBJ Richmond, he worked at the WDBJ bureau in Lynchburg where he assisted in establishing the New River newsroom in 1982. Since he started his journalism career in the 80s, he has won several awards and honors including the George A. Bowles Jr. Award in 2009 for Distinguished Performance in Broadcast News. The following year (2010), he received a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for his series, “Headlines in Hard Times.”In 2011, The Roanoke Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference honored Joe with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Service in Media Award.
Later in 2012, during the group’s annual Citizen of the Year Awards, Joe was honored by the Roanoke Branch of the NAACP. In 2014, he received an Emmy Award for his series, “Virginia Roots & Tennessee Dreams: The Legacy of Patsy Cline.” Later in 2016, he won a regional Emmy Award and also won the inaugural Adam & Alison Award. In 2019, Dashiell was inducted into the Silver Circle of the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Still, in 2019, he won The Associated Press Robert Gallimore Distinguished Service Award.
