Yates serves as the Chief Meteorologist at WMBD-TV based in Peoria, Illinois. Prior to working at WMBD-TV, he worked at KGWN in Cheyenne, Wyoming where he served as the Chief Meteorologist from September 2009 to April 2015. He had previously spent 1 year serving the station as a morning meteorologist from August 2008 to September 2009.
He kickstarted his career at the Twistex Tornado Research Team where he deployed probes in the path of tornadoes and storm chasers. Since he started his journalism career, he has won several awards and honors including the Wyoming Association of Broadcasters’s 1st Place for “Weather Person of the Year” in June 2010, 2012, and 2011.
