Leiter is a former professional baseball player and sports commentator working for MLB Network in Secaucus, New Jersey. Additionally, on September 15, 1987, Leiter made his Major League Baseball debut for the New York Yankees as their starting pitcher, earning the victory in a 4-3 triumph over the Milwaukee Brewers. On a YES Network broadcast, Leiter related how, early with the Yankees, manager Billy Martin approached him and questioned him about why he was training weights. In reply, Leiter said, “To make my arm stronger.” Moreover, Billy is attributed with saying, “If you want to strengthen your arm, do some long toss.” The young Leiter was easily frightened; according to teammate Tommy John. “If they had named him to start on opening day, he wouldn’t have slept for a week.”
That was how anxious he was. He was a newbie who kept hitting the walls. Additionally, on a chilly, rainy day in 1989, manager Dallas Green allowed Leiter to pitch 162 pitches in one of his final starts as a young pitcher for the Yankees. On April 30, 1989, the Yankees dealt him to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for outfielder Jesse Barfield. The left-hander underwent an arthroscopy procedure after being traded to Toronto. Due to the operation, a pinched nerve in his elbow, tendonitis, and another arthroscopic procedure on his left shoulder, he pitched for the Blue Jays in fewer than 20 innings from 1989 to 1992. Leiter left Toronto after the 1995 season and signed a free-agency contract with the Florida Marlins.
In his debut year as a Marlin, Leiter went 16-12 with a 2.93 ERA and 200 strikeouts, earning a spot on his first All-Star squad. In the Marlins’ fire sale the following offseason, in which owner Wayne Huizenga dealt practically all of the team’s more expensive players. Leiter was part of the deal that sent him to the New York Mets. Furthermore, again selected for the All-Star squad in 2000, Leiter with a record of 16-8, a 3.20 ERA, and 200 strikeouts. In 2000, the Mets again made the playoffs and this time advanced to the World Series. At Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium, respectively, Leiter began games one and five of the 2000 World Series.
Leiter became a free agent after the 2004 season when the Mets chose not to exercise his US$10 million option for the following year. Additionally, on December 8, 2004, Leiter agreed to a one-year, $8 million deal with his previous team, the Marlins. The New York Yankees traded Leiter for a player to be named later on July 15, 2005, as they had four starting pitchers on the injured list at the time. On July 17, 2005, he made his first start for the Yankees against the division-leading Boston Red Sox since April 26, 1989.
