Prior to joining the NBC Bay Area News team, he worked for ABC7 KGO in San Francisco. During his working time there, he served the station as a news reporter and fill-in anchor for six years from 2007 to Jan 2013.
Before that, he worked in newsrooms all over the country including in Albany at WTEN as an anchor, in Phoenix at KSAZ, in Palm Beach at WPBF as an anchor and reporter, and in Sacramento at KTXL working as a reporter and anchor. During his working time at WTEN, he was named “Best Anchor” by the Albany Times Union. He reported live from New York City after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
McSweeney rejoining NBC Bay Area is a homecoming for him, from 1987 to 1995, he worked for the station as a general assignment reporter. During that time, he won several hours and awards. He is a lifelong Giants and 49ers fan.
