Atkinson attended The University of Texas at Austin where he studied between 1984 and 1988. While there, he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. He went on to join the University of Houston-Downtown where he studied between 1988 and 1989.
Afterward, he went on to join Arizona State University – Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. There, he studied between March 2019 and May 2021 and obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Digital Audiences in Spring 2021, Digital Audience and Acquisition. Steve Atkinson Career
Atkinson worked with ABC 10 News where he was serving the station as a co-anchor for the 10 News at 5, 6, 7, and 11 PN. There, he was co-anchoring the Evening News alongside Lindsey Peña and Kimberly Hunt. He is now serving Spectrum Science – a GHMC Company as a Vice President of Executive Media Engagement. Atkinson joined the company in September 2022.
He kick-started his career in Arkansas in the year 1989 and returned to his home state of Texas with stops at KVUE-TV in Austin and WFAA-TV in Dallas. In the course of his career, he has been privileged to receive multiple wards from the Arkansas and Texas Associated Press for Best Sportscaster and Sports Reporter.
He also spent about four years in Denver, Colorado where he was collecting an Edward R. Murrow Award for his reporting and a Regional Emmy Award as a television host. The month of May 2006 saw him join the KGTV News team. There, his work has ranged from in-depth reporting on the U.S. and Mexico border issues and profiling San Diego’s community leaders for which he has been awarded about a dozen Emmys.
