Butler attended Elmore County High School. Later on, he went on to join Troy University where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and Media Studies. This was after studying at the university between 1984 and 1988. Later on, he went on to join Mississippi State University where he obtained a Certificate in Broadcast Meteorology. There, he studied between 1992 and 1996.

Butler works with ABC 32 News/WNCF-TV where he serves the station as a Chief Meteorologist. He is also the Weather Authority Chief Meteorologist and was born in Montgomery, Alabama. Prior to joining the ABC 32 News team, he was working with WRDW in Augusta, Georgia where he had spent about six years. He worked for the station between September 2009 and August 2015.
He, however, began his weather broadcasting career in the year 1988 when he was working for WTVY in Dothan. This is in addition to working with WSFA in Montgomery where he was serving as a noon weather anchor between 1989 and 1992. Later on, he joined the WTLV team in Jacksonville, Florida, and the WRBC-TV team in Birmingham.
Asides from this, he has served as a Chief Meteorologist at WGNX now known as WGCL in Atlanta. He has also served at WAAY in Huntsville, and the WSET team in Lynchburg/Roanoke, Virginia. Butler holds both a Certified Broadcast Meteorological Seal(CBM) from the American Meteorological Society(AMS) and the seal of approval from the National Weather Association(NWA).
Asides from this, he has won the “Best Weathercaster” award from the Associated Press numerous times in Alabama, Georgia, and Virginia. He has also been nominated for an Emmy Award for his work. Asides from this, he is an FAA-licensed pilot and owns his own drone. Butler has part of his family in Elmore County and a lot of friends throughout the area.
