Baderinwa was struck by a vehicle on July 23, 2004, while reporting on floods in Hackensack, New Jersey. She fell unconscious for 20 mins. To date, the driver was never identified. Despite having a knee replacement and breaking her arm, she says that she feels no anger and that she feels lucky to be alive after a couple of months of painful rehabilitation. In the year 2005, she explained that she survived because the flooded street broke the fall and one of the cameramen held her head above the water.

After the accident, Baderinwa championed efforts to handle the growing problem of hit-and-run accidents. She was awarded the NJ Governor’s Representative Award for Traffic Safety, for her efforts.
