After graduating from high school and earning his high school Diploma, he had to further his education. He joined East Carolina University in Greenville in 2016 to pursue his career course. In 2019, he attained his Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Atmospheric Science after completing his studies there. James did not stop there, he later returned to East Carolina University in Greenville in 2020. In 2022, he earned a Master of Science degree in Geography with a concentration in Tropical Meteorology and Atmospheric Circulations.

Russell James joined WITN-TV in Greenville, NC. Prior to joining the WITN weather team, he worked in Wilmington, NC. He serves the station as a meteorologist. His love and passion for weather began at a very young age. When he was only 6 years, he encountered meteorology. During Hurricane Charley in 2004, he was on vacation with family in Orlando and it devastated much of southwest Florida. In addition to that, heavy rain and strong winds from the storm intrigued him to develop an interest in the meteorology field.
In 2006, he survived an F3 tornado which is one of the events that really changed his life and made him pursue meteorology. Another thing that inspired him to like informing people about the weather and helping to save lives is the sheer destruction and power of the tornado. While in college, he learned to articulate forecasts and develop weather briefings for several students outside of his major. He also worked with the president of the ECU AMS Club to help fellow classmates host forecast forums and volunteer efforts in the community. This was during Hurricane Florence in 2018 which threatened Eastern North Carolina.
During his leisure time, he likes spending time with friends and reading books. He owns a dog named Coco who gives him joy and a reason to stand on his toes. In addition to that, he loves to cook everything from savory dishes to cake to casseroles. James also got a library of radio airchecks and jingle packages he collected from various radio stations around the country.
