Mackey works for CBS Colorado News where he serves the station as a Sports Anchor and Reporter. Prior to this, he was working for KUSA 9News where he served the station as a Sports Director. He worked for the KUSA 9 News team between the years 2000 and 2023 serving the station for about 23 years. He has been covering the Denver sports news in the television market for over two decades now.
During his time at the University, he was interning in the Sports Department with the CBS News Colorado team and he is excited to be back and to rejoin the news team. He stated that he learned under Gary Miller, Marcia Neville, Les Shapiro, and Mark McIntosh.
Rod went on to add that he now has a picture of the four of them on the wall on his desk. His first experience in broadcasting professionally was at a radio station located in Vail. After his radio career, his first television career took him all the way to Rapid City and to Cedar Rapids, then San Diego and finally back to Denver.
Mackey stated that in the course of his career, his most memorable interview was the interview with Shaq Barrett and his family on a firetruck during the Broncos Super Bowl 50 parade. On the other hand, he stated that his favorite musician is Tom Petty whereas his favorite vacation spot is Vail.
Away from work, he enjoys water skiing, Mountain Biking, Skiing, Frisbee Golf, and Tennis. His favorite food is Stone Crab whereas his favorite sports team is any team that has kids playing on it. He stated that his favorite word is win and his least favorite word is lose. On the other hand, his favorite noise is laughter and his least favorite noise is crying. He stated that the thing that keeps him in Colorado is just everything as it is the best place on earth.

Rod joined Kim Christiansen live on air during his last day in the station to just ay goodbye even as they looked back on some of his favorite memories. He stated that his time at the KUSA 9News had been tremendous. Mackey went on to state that all the players, coaches, and people he has worked with in the sports department had been a fun ride.
