Monica faced a pivotal moment in her life when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, specifically identified as a sphenoid wing orbital meningioma. Furthermore, this tumor was located within her skull, dangerously close to her carotid artery and optic nerve, posing significant risks.
In an initial effort to combat the tumor, Monica underwent surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in October of that year. The medical team aimed to remove as much of the tumor as possible, hopeful that it would not only be benign but also that it would not recur. However, a follow-up scan in 2021 brought unwelcome news: the tumor had expanded from her eye socket into her cavernous sinus. Additionally, this development necessitated a second surgery in December of the same year, employing the innovative transorbital neuroendoscopic surgery (TONES) technique. This approach involved accessing the tumor through Monica’s eyelid for removal.
The aftermath of her second surgery proved to be a challenging period for Monica, both physically and emotionally. Additionally, to monitor the tumor’s status and detect any potential regrowth. Monica is now committed to undergoing an MRI every six months.
