Nelson works with Denver 7 News where he serves the station as a Chief Meteorologist. He has been a weather forecaster for over 40 years and was forecasting weather in Colorado alone for over 25 years. After receiving his degree in Meteorology in the year 19767, he began working at Weather Central, which is Madison-based private weather consulting firm. The firm specializes in forecasts for agri-business, ski areas, power utilities, the Wisconsin TV Network, and over 40 other radio and TV stations nationwide
Additionally, he was also appointed as Executive Vice President of Weather Central in the year 1979 where he was supervising staff of 14 meteorologists. He also helped in providing forecasts crucial to the construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. While he was in Madison, he was partnering with fellow meteorologist, Terry Keely, in devising one of the first computer weather graphics systems for television. Between the years 1979 and 1984, he installed TV weather computers at over 50 stations across the nation. Additionally, he brought up the first weather computer to Colorado in the year 1982. This is in addition to training legendary Denver weatherman Stormy Rottman on that system.
The year 1985 saw his family move to St. Louis Missouri where he was serving as a Chief Meteorologist at a local station till the year 1991. While there, he was a member of the American Meteorological Society’s Board of Broadcast Meteorology.
They would approve candidates to receive the AMS Seal of Approval for Television Weather-casting. Mike also won 18 Emmy awards for Outstanding Weather Anchor. The year 2001 saw him being recognized by the Colorado Broadcasts Association as their “Citizen of the Year” for his volunteer work in Colorado schools.
He enjoys sharing his knowledge of the weather with the young and the old visiting 50 schools, clubs, and service organizations annually. His Tornado Dance is a very much anticipated event. In his career, he has spoken to over 750,000 school children.
