After completing his high school education Zaffino joined the University of Utah. Later, he graduated and obtained a Bachelor Of Science degree in Meteorology. He worked for KTVX in Salt Lake City as a weather producer while studying.

Zaffino is KGW’s chief meteorologist. Ever since his teacher drew weather maps on the chalkboard explaining the conditions needed to create a snowstorm and get everyone out of school for a day he has been making weather maps. He interned and then worked at KTVX in Salt Lake City as a weather producer while studying meteorology at the University of Utah.

He transitioned to Traverse City, Michigan to forecast weather at WGTU in 1984, and then anchored the morning and evening weathercasts in Battle Creek, Michigan. In 1985, he gladly came back to the West at KDRV in Medford, Oregon to anchor the weather. He was employed to do weekend weather at KATU in Portland in 1988.

Zaffino also did environmental reporting and sharpened his skills in writing and story-telling for television news. He assisted in creating KATU’s morning news and was later promoted to the evening newscasts. He left KATU to become Chief Meteorologist at KGW in 1996.

In 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2002, 2006, 2008 and 2009, 2012, and 2015 he was named Best Weathercaster by The Oregon Associated Press. Zaffino won Emmy Awards for outstanding individual achievement in weather casting in 2000, 2015, and 2016 and has been Emmy nominated several other times.
