Mullen graduated from Loyola University of the South. Mullen works as the Main Anchor and Reporter for NBC 7. Before joining the station, he worked at ABC News in New York as an anchor, where he anchored America This Morning, and World News Now and was a correspondent for Good Morning America and World News Tonight. He worked for NBC News based in Beijing as a Chief Asia correspondent before taking the helm anchoring the 5 pm, 6 pm, and 11 pm newscasts with Monica Dean, and Catherine Garcia.

In Beijing, he always reported on notable Asian and Chinese events with an in-depth report of The Olympics filing stories for CNBC, MSNBC, NBC Nightly News, and The Today Show. Since the Chinese government’s crackdown on student demonstrators in 1989, he became the first journalist to broadcast a live report from Tiananmen Square in the run-up to the 2008 Olympics.

His first assignment was in WLOX-TV and Mississippi. After his first assignment, he joined KDFW-TV in Dallas, KING-TV in Seattle, and KRON-TV in San Francisco. Moreover, he has reported stories throughout the US, the Middle East, and Europe such as the aftermath of 9/11, The California Wildfires, and Hurricane Katrina.

He has won many national and regional awards for reporting and anchoring, such as a National Emmy Award for Outstanding News Coverage. Mullen was also named Outstanding Young Journalist of the Year by the Society of Professional Journalists. In Iraq, he was recognized for his story about the Kurd’s first-ever vote in that country’s historic election. His career has taken him to the furthest reaches of the world.
