Prior to joining KHOU 11, Benito spent two years (February 2012 to February 2014) reporting on major stories at KGUN-TV (Tucson, Arizona) as a reporter and fill-in anchor. Among his notable coverages include the Yarnell Hill Fire tragedy that killed 19 firefighters (the deadliest U.S. firefighting incident since 9/11), and the killing of Genna Ayup, which led to changes in Arizona law after exposing a legal loophole. While at the station, Benito earned two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and two Rocky Mountain Emmy nominations for border and feature reporting.
Before that, he had a memorable time at KMSB-TV (Tucson, Arizona), working as a weekend reporter. Here, he reported live from the University of Arizona Medical Center during the 2011 mass shooting that nearly killed Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. His earlier roles were at WLNS-TV (Lansing, Michigan) and at El Mundo (Madrid, Spain), where he reported internationally for one of Spain’s major newspapers. Benito has also taken on major assignments, including covering Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S.–Mexico border and traveling to Germany to report on the future of Houston’s iconic Astrodome.
