On January 20, 2025, Jean posted her photo on her Instagram page and she gave her story about being assaulted sexually, on the caption. The caption read that she was 18 years old when she was assaulted sexually by someone she knew and trusted. It took her years to realize she was likely drugged and even longer to understand how it affected her life. She never reported it because she feared that she would not be believed or that seeking justice would not be worth the emotional toll.
Jean is now feeling called to share her story – although it makes her anxious. She is realizing she is not alone, as SA (Sexual Assault) happens every 68 seconds in America, affecting 1 woman in a 6 women group. For years, she tried to forget, but her heart, body, and mind were holding onto the pain. Only now, nearly twice the age she was then, is she able to truly say it was not her fault.
The caption continued by saying that she is wishing she could comfort her younger self – it reminds her of her strength and worth, and the importance of healing in her own way. Since she cannot, she is sending a message of hope to others carrying this pain. She is also urging the next generation to learn that anything less than an enthusiastic yes is a no, no one is entitled to another person’s body, and consent can always be withdrawn. To her fellow survivors, she is saying they are more than their trauma, they are believed, and they are worthy.
