Choi works as a morning and noon co-anchor at 8 pm and 4:30 am for CBS News Bay Area, KPIX 5. He never thought he would be introducing his ride-share driver to National Public Radio when he jumped into the backseat. The hour-long ride to the airport turned into a conversation that included the economic divide, politics, and cultural differences between the East Coast and the West Coast.
He strives to get people good information every day at work. Choi sang bass in a highly competitive cappella group and performed in a barbershop quartet in high school. He has always been the type that gets involved in various activities and likes being outdoors. His way of being active and appreciating nature is by surfing, tennis, cycling, and Basketball.
Choi worked for the UCLA community, the Daily Bruin newspaper, the local news station, and for The Bruin News while majoring in Communication Studies at UCLA. At KCAL 9 he got a sports internship where he was able to interview top sports figures like Shaquille O’Neal, Phil Jackson, and Kobe Bryant. Before he pivoted to the news his career began as a passion for sports.
His journalism career included KVEW-TV in Kennewick, Washington, stints at Fox23 News in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and KTBZ-1430 Radio. Finally, he took a job as an anchor and reporter at Sports Net New York. He joined KITV in Honolulu in 2010 as part of the morning news prior to becoming a primary anchor for the 6 pm and 10 pm newscasts. For his Education, he majored in Communication Studies at UCLA.
Choi worked on the American Lung Association of Hawaii’s Council and is also a member of the Asian American Journalists Association. In April 2016 he joined KPIX 5 as morning and noon co-anchor. By 8 pm he tries to be asleep so that he can be at the station by 3:30 am to prepare for the 4:30 am newscast. He loves his job because he has the opportunity to learn something every day and to share that information. When his not working, he enjoys cycling in the Marin Headlands, hiking in Yosemite, and surfing at Ocean Beach.
