Kay was born in Wallingford and raised in Blewbury(then known as Berkshire, and now Oxfordshire) to her loving and caring parents. Additionally, she had spent time in various Middle Eastern countries where her father was posted as a British diplomat. Her mother, on the other hand, was a journalist, where she procured the genes and intended to pursue a career in journalism as a child. Unfortunately, her dad passed away in January year 2021 and was Swiss. She obtained her Swiss citizenship in the same year.

However, after deciding that a career in economics was not hers, she left in order to work for an aid agency in Zimbabwe.
After a short time, a friend of hers, Matt Frei, came to her with a tape recorder and persuaded her to become a journalist. She then kick-started her journalism career with the BBC in the year 1990 as a Zimbabwe correspondent for the African section of BBC World Service.
Later on, she returned to London in order to work for the BBC World Service radio. This was before being posted to Tokyo for BBC news television in the year 1992 and then Washington, D.C. in the year 1996. Later on, she joined The Times news bureau but later returned to the BBC working as a freelance journalist in the year 2002, based in the United States.
From the month of June year 2004, she co-presented the BBC World News bulletins with Mike Embley in London, shown on 230 public broadcast-television stations throughout the US and on BBC America. October of year 2007 saw her become a correspondent to presenter Matt Fei of BBC World’s one-hour Washington-based news broadcast. The broadcast was titled BBC World News America. It airs on BBC America, BBC WOrld news, and BBC News. Additionally, she also anchored the show until June of the year 2021.
Katty makes appearances as a guest panellist on Morning Joe and Mett the Press on NBC, Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO. In the past, she also appeared on Larry King Live on CNN and The Chris Mattews Show. Additionally, she also substituted for Diane Rehm on The Diane Rehm Show on NPR.
