At KETV NewsWatch 7 in Omaha, Cornell serves as the main evening anchor, where she delivers the 6 p.m., 9 p.m., and 10 p.m. news. Cornell joined KETV in 1992 as a reporter, later becoming a morning anchor and 5 p.m. anchor in 1995. From 1995 to 2013, she stepped away from daily anchoring to focus on creating award-winning documentaries, while balancing her career and family. She returned full-time to the anchor desk in August 2016, and her reporting continues to emphasize human-interest stories, children’s issues, adoption, addiction, mental health, and community struggles.
One of her memorable moments was traveling to South Sudan, Africa, in April 2013, where she produced an hour-long documentary on a medical mission team from Omaha alongside photojournalist Andrew Ozaki. Mission to Africa earned national recognition with a 2014 Edward R. Murrow Award in the documentary category, as well as a Heartland Regional Emmy Award.
Notably, her reporting and writing have earned her a wide range of honors, including five Regional Murrow Awards, four National Emmys, and two National Edward R. Murrow Awards. She also contributed to the KETV team that won the 2024 Service to America Award for its Teen Summit. In addition, she received the University of Nebraska Omaha’s 2013 Andy Award for Best International Journalism.
