His next step was the Conservatory of Theatre Arts & Film at the State University of New York at Purchase but he was expelled after he wrote a letter to the dean opposing the school’s evaluation system.

Josh officially started his acting career after he moved to LA, California, and got a part in Cracker, a short-lived drama series on ABC. He was later cast in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later taking the role of John Tate in 1998 as well as in The Faculty taking the role of Zeke Tyler. The following year, 1999, he appeared in The Virgin Suicides taking the roles of Trip Fontaine and in Black Hawk Down in 2001. Still, in 2001, he appeared in Pearl Harbor, “O”, and 40 Days and 40 Nights in 2002.
Josh was approached a couple of times in the early 2000s to take the role of Clark Kent / Superman but he always turned the offer down with his reasons being not wanting to commit to a predicted ten-year role and “It just wasn’t the kind of movie I wanted to do. I turned down other superhero roles as well.” He was also approached to take the role of Batman in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins but he again turned the offer down. In 1999, Josh was honored as one of Teen People’s “21 Hottest Stars Under 21”, one of People’s “50 Most Beautiful People”, and Teen People’s “25 Hottest Stars Under 25”.
His next films and series included Wicker Park (2004), Lucky Number Slevin (2006), Hollywood Homicide (2003), Sin City (2005), and Wicker Park (2004). In the mid-2000s, he appeared in The Black Dahlia, Resurrecting the Champ in 2007, 30 Days of Night, Rain Man (2008), and T Takes.
