John has a passion for San Diego’s sports community and telling their stories. He happens to be the longest-tenured full-time television sportscaster in the San Diego market. Howard has deep roots in the Southern California region where he is a 6th-generation Californian.
He began his broadcasting career working in Roseburg, Oregon where he was anchoring and reporting the general news. While there, he was quickly promoted to the news director. However, two years later in general news, he knew he was called for sports.
He got his first sports job in Rapid City, South Dakota. Later on, he made a return to California where he landed a job in San Luis Obispo. He was initially hired as the weekend sportscaster, which was prior to being promoted to the role of Sports Director at each of those stations.
During his time in college, he was mentored by the late Mitch Duncan who is a well-respected anchor/reporter at the News 8 team. He has also interned at the KNSD-TV team and the KGTV-TV team. His college career was highlighted by being named Homecoming King in his junior year. Away from work, he enjoys playing golf, skiing, motorcycling, and wakeboarding. As a skier, he has been able to race completely at the San Diego State.
