In 1990, he joined The University of Kansas where he attained his Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism in 1994. Later in 2006, he spent 1 week studying at The Poynter Institute. Becker serves as the weekdays at 5, 6, and 10 News Nightbeat anchor on WBIR-TV based in Knoxville, Tennessee. He also serves WBIR-TV as the moderator and producer of “Inside Tennessee” a half-hour weekly program. Previously, in 2008, he created a franchise named “Service & Sacrifice” which focuses on focused on the lives and life challenges of military veterans.
Prior to working at WBIR-TV, he worked at KGW TV based in Portland, Oregon where he served as an anchor and reporter from February 1998 to June 2006. Previously, from March 1996 to February 1998, he worked as a reporter and anchor at KTKA based in Topeka, Kansas. He previously worked at KQ-TV based in St.Joseph, Missouri where he served as a reporter and anchor from July 1995 to March 1996.
Since he started his journalism career, he has enclosed several stories including the wildfires in the Great Smoky Mountains and embedding with US troops during the war in Iraq. He also documented on the return trip to Vietnam with veterans 50 years after that war and reported on the aftermath of the BP oil spill in the Gulf Coast and Hurricane Katrina. He has also won several awards and honors including an Edward R. Murrow Award for his 2018 documentary Facing Ghosts Return to Vietnam.
The Tennessee National Guard honored him with the 2017 Adjutant General’s Distinguished Patriot Medal. In 2016, he won the Edward R. Murrow Award for his series, “Service & Sacrifice” and a Distinguished Citizen Award from the American Revolution. He has also won other awards and honors including “Civilian Warrior” Award, The Lester Speaks Award, and an Emmy.
