Prior to that, he anchored news at WABC-TV in New York for 10 years. At KFMB-TV in San Diego, California, he worked as a reporter and anchor and started broadcasting at KATV-TV in Little Rock, Arkansas.
His report on the war with Iraq was highly regarded from the time he spent in the Iraqi desert with United States Marines, to the eye-opening tours through Saddam Hussein’s Presidential Palaces, to foot patrol expeditions with the 3rd Infantry Division Terror Squad during firefights on the streets of Baghdad. He has covered everything both nationally and internationally from Washington politics, to the Pope in Mexico Denver, and New York, including, Space Shuttle disasters, bomb threats, plane crashes, active shooter situations floods, and hurricanes. His work has taken him abroad reporting from the Kremlin in Russia to the ruins of war in Vietnam.
Hurst’s interest in politics has led him to work as the moderator for many political debates and has allowed him to report many political conventions over the years. He volunteers with many organizations like, helping cancer patients at MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Lifeline Chaplaincy program. Hurst volunteers his time to the Star of Hope Homeless Shelter, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the American Heart Association, Medina Children’s Home, and the Cancer League.
